The Story of AB Adventures
Share
Did you know that the human race knows more about outer space than about our own oceans? The lack of oxygen and immense pressure of the depths make an unforgiving place for human life to exist and that is part of why the ocean is so mysterious to us as a species. Many coastal civilizations were intimately aware of the fact that the oceans could both sustain life but also take it in an instant. They knew of the fine line between exciting and dangerous that the depths held, and that fine line is the place where our story begins. AB Adventures was founded in order to solve the problems many of us face were the water meets the land and the spearos thrive.
Our first product was created out of the frustration of using sub optimal gear in our sport and the consequences of the gear not performing as well as you do at that critical moment. Our critical gear failure occurred on a trip to the remote region around Magdelena Bay, Mexico. The goal was to encounter one of the strongest fish in the ocean and see just how full of life the ocean could be. After two days of travel and months of planning, we finally arrived at Mag Bay ready for the adventure of a lifetime. While the fish were present, weather conditions were tough and the strong winds really limited our opportunities to get into the water with the amazing and sometimes dangerous creatures that call Mag Bay home. Our goal was to find a school of the very sustainable striped-marlin and be able to harvest one and try to understand our connection to the ocean. Because the conditions were extremely difficult, no bait balls were forming on the surface and opportunities were limited. In order to have a chance we would have to drive the boat in front of a school swimming in the waves and jump in and dive before they swam by in order to have a chance. This created the perfect opportunity to highlight the inadequacies in our gear. While no piece of gear was immune to failure in these circumstances, there was one piece that generated more than its fair share of trouble. The piece of gear was the slip-tips we were using. Time after time we would play our cards right and get in front of the school of marlin and make the perfect dive and line up a shot only to realize that in the process getting into the water our slip-tip had fallen off or become crooked making it useless.
Although our group ended up being successful on the last day of our trip, our frustration with the quality of slip-tips did not disappear and AB Adventures was created to solve the problem less than adequate gear in a world where mistakes can be devastating. AB Adventures is a partnership between Bill Corn and Aiden Hymas. Bill is a retired civil engineer with decades of experience spearfishing in the waters off the San Diego coast. Aiden is a college student studying engineering and business with a knack for solving problems that he encounters. Together between the professional expertise of Bill and the creative problem solving abilities of Aiden, AB Adventures created the MAX WAC Titanium Slip-Tip. It is designed with usability in mind and to solve the issues nearly every slip-tip we used has and is hopefully the first of many products to come from AB Adventures.
